What Are Ear Infections?

An ear infection is a condition in which the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum, becomes inflamed and swollen, often with fluid buildup. This fluid and swelling can affect the ear tissue, leading to pain, pressure, and temporary changes in hearing. Though more common in children, ear infections also affect adults.

Common Symptoms

Common Symptoms

  • Ear pain or pressure
  • Trouble hearing or a sense of fullness in the ear
  • Drainage from the ear
  • Fever, especially in children
  • Irritability, trouble sleeping, or tugging at the ear
  • Balance problems in some cases

If these symptoms are persistent or severe, an ENT evaluation can help determine the cause and the best treatment.

Medical Management

Many ear infections improve with medical therapy, which may include:

  • Pain relievers to reduce discomfort
  • Prescription ear drops, when appropriate
  • Oral antibiotics for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections
  • Treatment of contributing factors such as allergies or nasal congestion

Your ENT specialist may examine the eardrum, check for fluid behind it, and assess whether pressure problems or repeated infections are present.

Tympanostomy (Ear Tube Placement)

If ear infections happen frequently or fluid remains trapped behind the eardrum for several months, a minor procedure may be recommended. Ear tube placement creates a small opening in the eardrum to drain fluid and improve ventilation, reducing future problems.

Ear tube insertion is a quick outpatient procedure that allows fluid to drain and air to enter the middle ear. It is commonly recommended for children, though adults with chronic ear issues can also benefit from this safe and effective treatment.
