What Is Chronic Sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis is long-lasting inflammation of the sinus cavities that continues for 12 weeks or more, even with treatment. Swelling and blocked sinus drainage can lead to persistent congestion, facial pressure, and fatigue that can disrupt your daily life.

Common Symptoms

People with chronic sinusitis may experience:

  • Nasal congestion or stuffiness that doesn’t go away
  • Thick nasal drainage or postnasal drip
  • Facial pain, pressure, or headaches
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Bad breath or chronic throat clearing
  • Fatigue or feeling run-down

If these symptoms are ongoing, an ENT evaluation can determine whether chronic sinusitis is the cause.

Medical Management

Many patients improve with medical therapy, which may include:

  • Nasal saline rinses to clear mucus and allergens
  • Prescription nasal steroid sprays to reduce inflammation
  • Short courses of oral steroids, when appropriate
  • Antibiotics for bacterial infections
  • Evaluation and treatment of underlying allergies

Your ENT specialist will review your symptoms, perform an endoscopic exam, and assess imaging studies to create a treatment plan tailored to you.

In‑Office CT Imaging (Xoran MiniCAT)

Our practice offers on‑site sinus CT imaging using the Xoran MiniCAT, a low‑radiation cone beam CT scanner designed specifically for ENT patients. This allows us to evaluate chronic sinus issues quickly and accurately without sending patients to an outside imaging center.

Benefits for Patients:

  • Same‑day imaging during your appointment
  • Lower radiation exposure compared to traditional hospital CT scans
  • Fast, high‑resolution 3D images of the sinuses
  • Immediate results that streamline diagnosis and treatment
  • No need for additional appointments or travel to outside facilities
  • More convenient for families, especially those with tight schedules or long travel distances.

Surgical Options — FESS and Balloon Sinuplasty

Surgical Options — FESS and Balloon Sinuplasty

  • Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) uses a small camera and instruments through the nostrils to open blocked sinus passages and remove inflamed or obstructive tissue.
  • Balloon Sinuplasty gently widens narrowed sinus openings with a small balloon catheter to restore drainage without removing tissue.

Your ENT surgeon will help determine the safest and most effective approach for your anatomy and goals.

Chronic sinusitis can develop for several reasons, including:

Often, it’s a combination of factors rather than a single cause.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history review and a nasal exam. In some cases, imaging such as a CT scan of the sinuses may be recommended to evaluate inflammation, blockages, or structural issues.

If sinus symptoms last longer than 10–12 weeks, keep returning, or interfere with daily life, it may be time to see an ENT specialist. Ongoing sinus issues shouldn’t be ignored, especially if over-the-counter treatments haven’t helped.
