Deviated Septum

What Is a Deviated Septum?

The nasal septum is the thin wall that separates your nasal passages. When it’s off-center or crooked, known as a deviated septum, it can block airflow and make one side of your nose feel constantly congested. Nasal trauma is the primary cause, often without visible deformity. Less commonly, the condition can be congenital. In some cases of this condition, the internal cartilage shift can occur without nasal bone fracture.

Common Symptoms

A deviated septum can cause:

  • Nasal congestion (often worse on one side)
  • Frequent sinus infections or nosebleeds
  • Headaches or facial pressure
  • Snoring or breathing through the mouth

If these symptoms are ongoing, your ENT can determine whether a deviated septum is the cause.

Treatment Options

For mild cases, nasal sprays or decongestants may relieve symptoms. In more significant cases, a simple outpatient procedure called septoplasty can straighten the septum and improve airflow.

At Joplin ENT, our specialists offer expert diagnosis and personalized treatment to help you breathe easier and feel better.
