Hoarseness (Dysphonia)

Understanding Hoarseness

Hoarseness refers to weakness, raspiness, breathiness, or strain of the voice, occurring when the vocal cords in the larynx (voice box) become irritated or inflamed. Temporary hoarseness from colds, allergies, or voice overuse is common, but persistent issues may result from ongoing vocal strain; acid reflux or laryngopharyngeal reflux; thyroid or neurological disorders; vocal cord lesions such as nodules, cysts, or polyps; or irritants like smoke. Hoarseness can affect communication and sometimes indicate a serious condition, making it important to seek an evaluation with an ENT specialist.

Common Symptoms

People with hoarseness may notice a raspy, breathy, weak, or strained voice. Other associated symptoms can include:

• Throat pain
• Sensation of something stuck in the throat
• Difficulty swallowing
• Frequent throat-clearing
• Coughing up blood

If these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it’s important to seek evaluation by an ENT specialist.
