Vocal Nodules

Understanding Vocal Nodules
Vocal nodules, sometimes called “singer’s nodules,” are small, benign growths that form on the vocal cords due to repeated strain or overuse. These callus-like bumps prevent the vocal cords from vibrating normally, leading to changes in the voice.
While common in singers, teachers, and anyone who uses their voice frequently, vocal nodules can affect anyone. The good news is that with proper diagnosis and treatment, most people recover their normal voice without surgery.
Common Symptoms and Causes
Vocal nodules typically develop gradually from ongoing irritation or inflammation of the vocal cords.
Common symptoms include:
- Hoarseness or breathy voice quality
- Vocal fatigue or loss of vocal range
- Scratchy or rough voice
- Feeling of tightness or a “lump” in the throat
- Needing to clear the throat frequently
Common causes include:
- Overusing or straining the voice (singing, yelling, talking loudly)
- Poor vocal technique or speaking over noise
- Smoking or acid reflux (LPR)
- Chronic coughing or throat clearing
If hoarseness lasts longer than two weeks or you notice a persistent change in your voice, it’s important to be evaluated by an ENT specialist.

Diagnosis and Treatment
An ENT specialist can diagnose vocal nodules using a special scope to view the vocal cords directly.
Treatment often focuses on reducing strain and allowing the voice to heal naturally:
- Voice therapy with a speech-language pathologist
- Resting the voice and avoiding yelling or whispering
- Treating underlying conditions such as reflux or allergies
- Surgery (rarely needed) for nodules that don’t respond to therapy
