From One Conversation to Global Impact: Supporting ENT Care in Liberia

At Joplin Ear, Nose & Throat, our commitment to patient care doesn’t stop at our clinic doors, it extends across communities and even across continents. Through collaboration, generosity, and a shared mission to improve access to care, our team has had the privilege of supporting life-changing work in Liberia.

What began as a simple conversation has grown into something much more meaningful.

A few years ago, Dr. Renee Walker met Dr. Tabeh Freeman, an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeon, at a medical conference. At the time, Dr. Freeman had just completed his residency and was beginning to build an ENT practice in Monrovia, Liberia. He was building this practice with very limited equipment and resources. After learning more about his work and the needs in his community, a question was asked: How can we help?

That moment sparked a partnership.

Over the next two years, Joplin Ear, Nose & Throat worked alongside local hospitals, surgery centers, physicians’ offices, and community partners to gather and donate essential medical equipment. The result was the shipment of an entire trailer filled with critical tools—an operating microscope, anesthesia machines, otologic drills, exam chairs, flexible scopes, surgical instruments, and more than 100 pairs of scrubs.

These are not just supplies, they are tools that enable care, restore function, and change lives.

Why This Work Matters

In many parts of Liberia, access to specialized ENT care is extremely limited. Outside of major cities, patients often go years without diagnosis or treatment. During a recent outreach in Grand Gedeh County, Dr. Freeman and his team conducted free screenings for ear, nose, and throat conditions, evaluating over 130 patients in just a few days.

The need is significant.

Patients presented with untreated hearing loss, chronic infections, and large thyroid masses. These were conditions that, in many cases, have gone untreated for years due to lack of access and financial barriers. Some children are unable to attend school because they cannot hear. Others live with pain, discomfort, or social isolation caused by visible or untreated conditions.

For many, even basic care is out of reach.

Through outreach efforts like these, patients are identified and scheduled for surgeries that can dramatically improve their quality of life. However, these procedures require resources, equipment, and continued support.
